History of Red Spring Garage

The Red Spring Garage (RSG) was constructed in 1907 on Landing Road at the crest of the hill in “The Landing” neighborhood of Glen Cove. Red Spring Garage first opened as an automobile dealership in 1908, selling Mitchell luxury automobiles to wealthy Gold Coast residents. The address is 107 Landing Rd, Glen Cove, NY 11542.

Until 1925 an electric trolley ran in front of the Red Spring Garage, connecting the Steamboat Landing with the Long Island Railroad station at Glen Street, Glen Cove. This trolley allowed business people returning from New York City to drop off and retrieve their automobiles quickly and easily from RSG.

The RSG was literally built over a portion of the underground “Red Spring“, so named for the color of its iron-rich water! Red Spring garage retains a red exterior today in honor of our history and heritage.

The Red Spring Garage eventually stopped selling Mitchell automobiles, but has endured through the years as a repair shop serving Gold Coast residents under various names. For generations, neighbors passing by have waved or stopped in when the garage door was open, looking to see which classic cars were in the shop.

The Bedell family is proud to continue this neighborhood small business tradition which began 115 years ago. We moved our full machine shop into the RSG in 2006, so we could offer skilled machining services in addition to auto repairs and mechanical restorations. We invite you to come in and see our classic car projects, and to see how we can help you with your own classic restoration projects, foreign or domestic.
